Rotorua Events Calendar Packed Full in 2011

In the coming months, this popular visitor destination will host mountain biking, a relay race, and events that celebrate the diversity of New Zealand culture. The Galaxy Travel NDuro Winter MTB Series 2011 on Sunday 14 August is said to be New Zealand’s most popular mountain bike series and it takes place on one of New Zealand’s best mountain biking trails in Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa Forest. There are events for everyone from beginners to professionals – and there’s a spot prize of a Queenstown MTB trip for two!
In September, get your rugby supporters gear out and support your favourite team at Rotorua International Stadium. Catch Fiji vs. Namibia on Saturday 10 September 2011 or watch Samoa vs. Namibia on Wednesday 14 September. If you’re visiting Rotorua outside these dates, head along to the Rugby World Cup Official Rotorua Fan Zone at Rotorua Energy Events Centre and watch the action of the Rugby World Cup on the big screen.
Cultural Rotorua comes to the fore in October 2011 with the Rotorua Deepawali Festival on Saturday 1 October. Deepawali means ‘row of lights’ and is celebrated every year by Hindus around the world. The following weekend continues the celebration of culture in Rotorua with the HI-TEC Rotorua Ekiden Relay on Saturday 8 October. In this popular event, teams of six competitors run a relay race but instead of carrying a baton, runners wear a traditional tasuki sash! More than 2,000 runners are expected to participate and there are spot prizes to be won.
Later in the year, Rotorua visitors can also look forward to the Royal New Zealand Ballet performing Sleeping Beauty on Wednesday 7 December and Thursday 8 December 2011.
